US Deploys Additional Forces To Middle East As Iran Says Its Previous Restraint "Led To Miscalculations" By Israel, Vows "Harsh And Regretful Response"
Israeli Official: Majority Of Iran's S-300 Air Defenses Systems Taken Out In Latest Strike
WASHINGTON/TEHRAN - The United States is sending more forces to the Middle East, including the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadron, and tanker aircraft, and several U.S. Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region, according to the Department of Defense.
Statement From Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder on Middle East Force Posture Updates
Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided the following statement: "In keeping with our commitments to the protection of U.S. citizens and forces in the Middle East, the defense of Israel, and de-escalation through deterrence and diplomacy, the Secretary of Defense ordered the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadron and tanker aircraft, and several U.S. Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region.
These forces will begin to arrive in coming months as the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group prepares to depart.
These deployments build on the recent decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to Israel as well as DoD's sustained Amphibious Ready Group Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) posture in the Eastern Mediterranean. These movements demonstrate the flexible nature of U.S. global defense posture and U.S. capability to deploy world-wide on short notice to meet evolving national security threats.
Secretary Austin continues to make clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people.
The new deployments come as Iran said that although it has shown restraint in responding to the attacks by Israel (which were in retaliation for a recent ballistic missile attack on Israel), Tehran sees the restrain it has shown as having led to "miscalculations" by Israel and resulted in "increased provocations".
