Travel Alerts Issued For Rwanda, DRC Due To Increasing Violence At The Shared Border
U.S. citizens should reconsider travel to the northern regions of the Rwanda-DRC border.
US TRAVEL—Multiple travel alerts have been issued for Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) due to increasing violence at the shared border in the northern district of Rubavu, which borders the DRC city of Goma.

According to the U.S. State Travel Department, "U.S. citizens should reconsider travel to the northern regions of the Rwanda-DRC border."

Rwanda: (Today) "There are reports of increasing violence at the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) border in the northern district of Rubavu bordering the DRC city of Goma. Residents in and around the border areas of Gisenyi and the Rubavu District report machine gunfire, artillery shelling, and border delays. U.S. citizens should reconsider travel to the northern regions of the Rwanda-DRC border."
Democratic Republic of the Congo (January 26th): "On Jan. 27, protests are expected in Kinshasa. Expect an increased police presence and heavier traffic in major cities throughout the day. U.S. Citizens should keep a low profile and limit their movements.
Due to expected disruptions outside the U.S. embassy, the Consular Section will be closed to the public on Jan. 27. All Consular appointments are canceled, and rescheduling instructions will be sent via email. U.S. citizens in need of emergency assistance, call +243-972-616-193."
Democratic Republic of the Congo (January 24th): "The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa advises U.S. citizens to depart to a safer location while airports and borders are still open due to an increase in the severity of armed clashes near Sake, North Kivu and the likelihood of increased insecurity in the region, including in Goma.
There are reports of internet outages and increased presence of security checkpoints throughout Goma and near the border with Rwanda. Due to the uncertain security situation in North Kivu, there are no plans for U.S. government-coordinated assistance for U.S. citizens as travel to North Kivu is restricted for U.S. government personnel.
