Russia Considers Resumption Of Nuclear Weapons Testing After Altering Its Nuclear Doctrine
Russia has claimed that there are indirect signs the US plans to resume full scale nuclear testing, and says it will respond in kind.
MOSCOW - Russia is considering resuming nuclear weapons testing, a decision that could heighten global tensions and spark a new arms race. This follows Moscow's recent update to its nuclear doctrine on November 19th, which now includes provisions for using nuclear weapons against even a non-nuclear state if its aggression towards Russia is backed by a nuclear-armed nation, treating such actions as a joint attack.
This consideration comes after the Russian parliament voted to revoke its ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), aligning its stance with that of the United States, which has signed but has not ratified the treaty.
The decision has sparked concerns among arms control experts about the stability of the current nuclear testing moratorium that has been in place for nearly three decades, which Russia points out has been completely voluntary on their part.
