Russia Carries Out Tactical Nuclear Drills In Response To "Threats" By "Western Officials" Against Russia

MOSCOW - Russia has begun carrying out tactical nuclear drills in the southern military district to test the use of "non-strategic nuclear weapons" in response to what it says are "threats" that have been made by "individual Western officials" against Russia, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense and state-run media.

The Russian military said, "In accordance with the instructions of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the first stage of the exercise with practical testing of the preparation and use of non-strategic nuclear weapons began in the Southern Military District under the leadership of the General Staff of the Armed Forces".
The Russian Foreign Ministry also reported the United States carried out a “subcritical” experiment at a specialized underground laboratory on the nuclear test site in Nevada on May 14th.
Russian state-run media reported that missile formation personnel of the Southern Military District are "practicing combat training tasks of obtaining special ammunition for the Iskander tactical missile system, equipping launch vehicles with them and covertly moving to positions in preparation for launches".
Aerospace Forces aviation units, it says, are training to install "special combat units of aviation weapons," including the Kinzhal aeroballistic hypersonic missiles, and conducting sorties to "designated patrol areas" according to Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, "The ongoing exercise is aimed at maintaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of units for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond and in order to unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state in response to provocative statements and threats of individual Western officials against the Russian Federation".
