NASA/DOD Tracking Possible Non-Maneuverable Spacecraft Collision With Russian Satellite
NASA cautioned that although the spacecraft are not expected to collide with one another, any collision would result in significant debris generation.
NASA/DOD - According to both NASA and the Department of Defense, the DOD is currently monitoring a potential collision between NASA's Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics Mission (TIMED) spacecraft and the Russian Cosmos 2221 satellite.
The spacecraft and satellite, which are non-maneuverable spacecraft locked in orbit, are expected to make their closest pass at around 1:30 a.m. EST on Wednesday at an altitude of around 373 miles according to the NASA statement.
