Conflict Erupts Between Syrian Security Forces, And Hezbollah, Lebanese President Orders Military To Respond
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has ordered the country's military to respond to the source of fire targeting Lebanese territory, according to the Lebanese Army.
BEIRUT/DAMASCUS - The Syrian Army has crossed into Lebanon, clashing with Hezbollah militants. The incursion took place in the town of Hawik in the Hermel region.
Update: Lebanon's Health Ministry says 6 people were killed and two injured during an Israeli airstrike in Baalbek, eastern Lebanon. The Israeli military reported carrying out strikes in Beqaa, Lebanon earlier today.
The incursion led to intense gunfights and the use of light to medium weaponry, including mortar shells deployed by Syria to prevent Hezbollah from advancing into Al Qusayr.
This escalation follows a series of repelled advances by Hezbollah on Al Qusayr, which resulted in the Hezbollah forces being pushed back into Lebanon. As the Syrian Army pushed into Hawik, Hezbollah militants were forced to retreat, further intensifying the conflict and raising tensions between the neighboring countries.
Lebanese political activist Omar Salloum told The Media Line which was also cited by The Jerusalem Post, that Hezbollah frequently uses Hawiik, Lebanon for weapon and drug smuggling operations. Al Qusayr in Syria is similarly known to be a smuggling hub for the organization.
